In 1933, the Montevideo Convention formally codified the theory of modern statehood, declaring the four basic qualifications of being a state as having a permanent population, a defined territory, government and the capacity to enter into relations with other states. Having met these conditions, many micronations worldwide have self-declared their sovereignty and exist as independent entities wielding political and cultural influences. The motivation behind micronationalism varies from drawing attention to specific social issues to preserving the local heritages.

As Hershwellians, we believe in micronationalism as an experiment with civic responsibilities and a way to improve our understanding of the world we live in. We strive to promote micronationalism in society as a valuable and professional sub-culture that builds us as better and more learnt humans.
